Choosing eco-friendly isn’t just a choice; it’s a commitment to a brighter, greener tomorrow.
Plastic For Change, has been working towards reducing plastic waste and extreme poverty in Kasumbalesa, a town on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The organization has established a buy-back center that has created employment opportunities for 80 vulnerable women who were previously marginalized. These women are now part of a larger team that comprises over 2759 registered and trained waste pickers from Zambia and the DRC.
Plastic For Change has been working towards inclusivity, and as a result, 90% of its waste pickers are women. The organization received funding from the UKAID fund to develop and test a new agent-based collection model that facilitates plastic collection directly from consumers. This model has made the work of waste pickers safer, healthier, and more secure.
Over the last three years, Plastic For Change has collected an estimated 620 tons of plastic waste, generating an annual revenue of approximately 48,000 USD. This collection has relieved overfilled landfills and unclogged drainages in the area.
Currently, Plastic For Change is developing an app that will allow households to capture the value from their waste efficiently. The organization has also formed a partnership with the local municipal council to integrate the segregation at source model, which aims to prevent overfilling of mixed waste at the local dumpsite.
The organisation has also received a $20,000 equity-free grant from UKAID, which has allowed them to secure machinery and equipment.
Additionally, they have received technical assistance and training on business plan writing, donor mapping, financial management, human resource management, bookkeeping, ESG, and supply chain management.
We have worked with some of most reputable organizations in the world and the country.
Apart from the many impact areas, Plastic For Change is involved in various impactful initiatives, complemented by additional activities such as partnerships and collaborations, national and international commemorations, funding and support, and community engagements
